Chinese culture month

11 May 2012 to 13 Jun 2012

To honour the 20th anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations between Slovenia and People’s Republic of China and also the second anniversary of establishment of the Confucius Institute Ljubljana, a great number of cultural events are going to take place as part of the Chinese Cultural Month.

Slovenia and its visitors will have an opportunity to embrace the rich Chinese culture delivered to us by artists coming from Shanghai and Chengdu - a sister city of Ljubljana - between 6 and 12 May 2012. Civilisation, more than five thousand years old, will be presented through singing, playing assorted ancient instruments, such as ancient flute or double-reed bamboo pipe, acrobatics, dance, and their culture of drinking tea. Celebrations of the two important anniversaries are going to start in Maribor on 7 May 2012 at 7.30 pm in the Amfiteater of the II. gimnazija Maribor with a grand concert entitled “Echo from the Far East – Chinese Rhyme”, Foreign Exchange of Chinese culture volunteers performance in collaboration with the Confucius Institute Ljubljana. Four days after the Maribor premiere, the concert will see its replay in the Puppet theatre in Ljubljana as well. However, before that an important three-week exhibition will open on 8 May 2012 in the Emporium Gallery on Trg republike square in Ljubljana. The two prominent Chinese artists, Rong Kang and Wei Zhang, will be present at the opening of “The Tao follows the Nature” exhibition which will focus on traditional and modern Chinese paintings and show the highest forms of Chinese art – Chinese calligraphy. A globally renown Sichuan opera with masks, sword fights, and fire breathing will all be a part of the "Stage Under the Stars" performance on the 11 May 2012 at 8.00 pm.

Moreover, other Chinese artists will prepare a photo exhibition from Chengdu, a street performance in the old part of Ljubljana and a multimedia exhibition by Huiquin Wang, entitled “Tea and Water” on the 5 June 2012 in the Equrna Gallery. The rich programme of the month of Chinese culture will end on 13 June 2012, a date carefully selected due to the symbolic links with the life of Ferdinand Avguštin Hallerstein, a major scientist of the 18th century and the first Slovenian who immigrated to China where he built a successful career.

Chinese Culture Month is organised by Confucius Institute Ljubljana in cooperation with the Municipality of Ljubljana, the Embassy of the People's Republic of Chine, the town Maribor and the partner of the Faculty of Economics in Ljubljana – Shanghai Institute of Foreign Trade.
